Emma Gray Pitt is an
editorial designer in NYC.

Emma is a left-brained creative, and that identity drives everything she does—whether she’s maintaining a strict eye for detail in a design project or bringing her design talent to a communications strategy. Currently, she is an editorial designer at The Knot.

Emma earned a B.A. in print journalism from American University while gaining experience in design, and she has been seeking to unite those skills ever since. In addition to interning at Bethesda Magazine, she served as the design editor of American Literary Magazine for three years, earning the student-run publication a Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press (2012), an Apple Award from the College Media Association (2012) and first place in the Promotions & Advertising category of the Michigan State University Society for News Design's annual contest (2014).

After graduating, she was the art director's first call when a design position opened at Bethesda Magazine, and she seamlessly fit into the regional magazine's relentless production schedule. As a designer, Emma can confidently balance multiple facets of a publication. She has assigned photographers and illustrators, produced editorial pages, composed special advertising sections, advised on file issues with advertisers, managed communications with the printer, and created web and print marketing materials.

As an avid consumer of content herself, she is attentive to the needs of the reader. She knows intelligent audiences want efficiency and consistency, so she strives to make a brand impressive—whether on a printed page or a webpage. She is comfortable advising editors on what will make a story present best visually and can also work with developers to figure out what’s feasible for a web design. She gets excited about big-picture projects that stretch both her creative and logical muscles.

Outside of work, she loves traveling and eating, especially at the same time. Coffee makes her antsy, but she's always happy to sit down over chai.
